Family Law Facilitator
What is a Family Law Facilitator?
The Family Law Facilitator of the Superior Court of El Dorado County has been established to:
Help the parties who cannot afford an attorney to represent themselves in Family Court by offering information and help with court procedures through workshops and individual personal assistance. The Family Law Facilitator is available to help both parents and all other parties who have questions about child/spousal support, health insurance, and the availability of community resources to help families.
Make referrals to other resources, including:
- Assistance in dispute resolution
- Low or no cost legal services
- Personal property mediation
What kind of help can you get?
The facilitator can help you in preparing your own forms and can give general information on:
- How to obtain, change or enforce child and spousal support orders.
- Child and spousal support calculations.
- Assistance with Orders after Hearing and Wage Assignments.
How does the Family Law Facilitator Work?
The Family Law Facilitator is an attorney available to provide procedural assistance to people who are representing themselves in Family Court. The facilitator is not your lawyer, but is a neutral person who does not represent any parent or party. The facilitator may provide information and services to the other party in your case. There is no attorney-client relationship between you and the facilitator. Communications between you and the facilitator are not confidential. You should consult with your own attorney if you want personalized advice or Strategy, to have a confidential conversation, or to be represented by an attorney in court.
People who have hired their own lawyers are not eligible for help by the Family Law Facilitator.
The Family Law Facilitator will not represent you at a court hearing, but can help you prepare your court forms for that hearing or the orders after hearing.
Individual assistance in obtaining a divorce cannot be provided.
